Indoor season opens

The Eastern Michigan University women’s track and field opened the indoor season with a win Friday against the University of Toledo and University of Detroit Mercy at the Bowen Field House.

Eastern earned 123.5 points, Toledo scored 83 points and Detroit Mercy had 64.5 points.

The field events began the meet when senior Angela Scarber won the weight throw and set a EMU record at 17.38 meters. Freshman Lidia Gomez Diaz took second place in the event throwing 16.67 meters.

Eastern won 10 out of the 13 events at the meet, taking first and second place in four events.

In the 1,000-meter run, Victoria Vornoko won (2:53.03), and Beverly Elcock was second (2:53.31).

EMU also took first and second in shot put, pole vault and weight throw.

Coach Sue Parks said winning the first event of the year feels better because the Eagles beat a Mid-American Conference opponent in Toledo.

“We were just solid across the board,” Parks said.

The next meet for the women’s team will be the Akron Opener on Jan. 13.
