Eagles end 2011 with loss to Seatle University

In the second day of the Washington Dental Services Holiday Hoops Tournament, the Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball team took a 75-72 loss to the Seattle University Redhawks at the KeyArena. The win against the Saint Louis University Billikens had moved them up to the Championship Game of the Tournament.

The game began with a bang when Tavelyn James, who was selected to be on the All-Tournament team, scored the first basket. James finished the game with 12 points and Natashia Watkins was the leading scorer with 22. Olivia Fouty was able to pull down seven rebounds and score 18 points to help the Eagles. Desyree Thomas was a huge asset in aiding the team by giving out seven assists and grabbing 12 rebounds.

Though the Eagles and the Redhawks constantly fought for the lead most of the game, in an intense second half, they were able to grasp a two point lead with 00:34 left in the game. However, Redhawks’ Ashley Ward was able to sink free throws which put them in the lead over the Eagles and Sylvia Shephard clinched the lead for Seattle by sinking a two-pointer.

The Eagles faltered at the three point line as they were unable to sink any throughout the game. Another issue holding the Eagles back from victory was their shooting percentage, landing in at 42.7 compared to the Redhawks’ 55.6 percent.

The Eagles have lost four of their past six games, with three of those loses ending in overtime.

The Eagles return home to take on the Wyoming Cowgirls (4-8) at the Convocation Center with the tip off at 2 p.m.
