NASA rover launches*
NASA’s Curiosity Rover was launched Saturday for an 8 ½ month trip to Mars.

Equipped like a mobile nuclear powered laboratory weighing one ton, the car-sized rover will prove if life ever existed on the red planet by hunting for organic compounds. A jackhammer attached on the 7-foot arm of Curiosity will drill into rock while a mast of the same length will record footage with high-definition and laser cameras.

Formally known as the Mars Science Laboratory, Curiosity was launched on the Atlas V rocket in front of more than 13,000 guests at NASA’s space center in Cape Canaveral, Fla. The launch was the first of a Martian rover in eight years and the first to Mars in four.
