The Eastern Michigan University flag football team is achieving success on a weekly basis. The Rec-IM, along with the American College Intramural Sports Association, is giving every student the opportunity to play on his or her own intramural team.
During the intramural tournament, three tournaments are played with separate groups for men vs. men, women vs. women or co-ed games. Each plays to win an intramural championship T-Shirt.
With more than 3,000 students participating in intramural sports around the year, not much has changed for leagues participating this year. Many of those leagues are on campus fraternities, sororities, organizations, club sports or dorm halls. Each is looking to make a statement in this year’s games.
Jackie Moffett, the assistant director of intramural sports, is excited about the upcoming games.
“This season we have a lot of teams, and every year things get better with the same outcome,” Moffett said. “I believe the best outcome of these games are the fact that relationships are formed, and people become closer.”
Moffett was more than excited on speaking on this season.
“I’m a fan of these tournaments it builds, and the best part it relieves stress,” he jokingly said.
With last year’s champions, Buell Hall, looking to make a repeat, things seem to be different with an increased amount of teams. This year there is 36 teams. Everyone but the sponsors (the Rec-IM) are allowed to have a team, but more than five members have to be active to play.
If you are looking to view any upcoming games, they are held at the beginning of the week every Monday-Thursday at 6 p.m. If you miss the 6 p.m. games, don’t worry as eight games are played per day.
The game being played is still football, but many of the rules are changed, creating as little damage to students as possible and keeping them safe. The rules and regulations can be found on the Rec-IM website (www.emich.edu/recim/).
Moffett had little to say about the rules but still kept things in perspective.
“I think the rules are great for safety reasons, but the games will always be fun,” he said.
