With handmade holiday cards and help from the American Red Cross, Eastern Michigan University’s Veteran Services will be letting those in the U.S. military know they’re not forgotten this winter season.
On select dates throughout November and December, an effort called Holiday Mail for Heroes will give participants the opportunity to express support for active servicemen and women, veterans and families in the form of handmade holiday cards.
A craft table will be arranged in the Student Center on the upcoming dates: Monday, Nov. 21, 28 and Dec. 5 from 12-2 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 1 and 8 from 2-4 p.m.
EMU’s campus has one of the largest veteran student populations in the state of Michigan. Therefore, Holiday Mail for Heroes has special importance for the many members of campus who have served in the military themselves.
Freshman Lauren Golubski understands some of the struggles of serving in the military since several of her family members are involved.
“Not everyone that serves has a family, so the cards are something to look forward to,” she said. “I will be making a card. My dad and uncles were in the military and I know that those who serve our country don’t always feel appreciated.”
Holiday Mail for Heroes hits home for first-year student, Amanda Brown, who will one day find herself in the shoes of those receiving cards this holiday season.
“I would love to make a card,” Brown said. “I’m in ROTC, so I’ll be in that position one day. I think it’s really encouraging for those in the service.”
Holiday Mail for Heroes is a first-time event for Veteran Services.
The event is different in that it is not just for veterans, but for all students, faculty and staff interested in participating in the cause. Veteran Services will be using its own budget funds to purchase the supplies needed to make Holiday Mail for Heroes possible.
This event is organized in part by the American Red Cross to bring a taste of home and the holidays to members of the U.S. Military, veterans and their families, who might be far away from home during the holiday season.
“I found an advertisement for it online and thought it would be a good idea for the campus community to get involved and show their support for the service men and veterans on campus as well as across the nation,” said Deanna Lewandowski, an EMU graduate assistant working on this event.
Everyone is invited to stop by the Holiday Mail for Heroes table during the time slot on any of the given dates and make cards.
Those who are unable to make it to the Student Center during the specified times can stop by the Veteran Services office at 246 McKenny Hall at any time to make a card.
