EMU soccer kicks off homecoming with 5-1 win over Ball State

The Eastern Michigan University’s womens soccer team routed the visiting Ball State Cardinals in a 5-1 victory for its third win in the last four games.

In the previous weekend, Eastern Michigan (3-11-2, 3-5-1) split its two road games, winning at Northern Illinois 1-0 but losing at Western Michigan in a 2-1 double overtime loss. Coming into this game, EMU was still mathematically in the playoff hunt if it won the last three games of the season. Ball State (9-6-3, 4-3-2) came off two draws in its last three games.

Eastern Michigan got the scoring going right away two minutes into the game with a goal from Bianca Rossi. Rossi scored again almost 20 minutes in the first half for her fourth goal of the season. Ball State scored to make it 2-1, but EMU answered back with an Emily Dzik goal to put the Eagles in the lead 3-1 heading into halftime.

Eastern Michigan scored two more goals in the final half, one from Angela Vultaggio and Stephanie Clarke scored her first goal of the season off a free kick.

“Those are all the goals that we have been missing all season,” Clarke said. “It’s nice to show everyone in the MAC that we can put the goals away when it matters.”

Rossi had two goals in the game while Clarke and Chelsea Detrick got two assists in the contest.

The final home game of the season takes place at Scicluna Field against rival Central Michigan for a 3 p.m. start.
