The Eastern Michigan University men’s cross country team was without its top runners, Tereje Ejigu and Grzegorz Kalinowski, for the EMU Fall Classic at the Hudson Mills Metro Park on Friday in Dexter.
Freshman Warren Witchell led the way for the Eagles with a time of 15:30.33, finishing in sixth.
Two other runners for the Eagles placed in the top 10. Junior James Hughes finished ninth (15:34.14) and sophomore Harry Dixon finished 10th (15:34.91). Matt Wines was 20th for the Eagles (15:45.95).
Ejigu and Kalinowski did not compete.
EMU alumnus Curtis Vollmar was third (19:05). The winner of the Classic was Ben Miller (15:16.83), team and year unattached.
Next, the Eagles will look to defend last year’s title in the MAC championships, which will start at 10 a.m. Saturday in Muncie, Ind.
Women’s
The Eastern Michigan women’s cross country team had no runner place in the top 20 but did have three runners place in the top 30.
The team was also without some of its top runners, such as Victoria Voronko, at the EMU Fall Classic.
Leading the way for the Eagles was junior Tiffany Kincaid finishing 21st overall with a time of 19:05.88. Junior teammate Amber Hutson was 23rd (19:14.44) and junior Cassie Coffman placed 29th (19:35.23).
Another notable was freshman Mary Smock, finishing 35th (19:55.89).
The winner of the Classic was Lindsey Clark (17:52.20), year and team unattached.
Next on the Eagles’ schedule is the MAC championships, which will start at 10 a.m. Saturday in
Muncie, Ind.
