Cross country teams are third at invitationals

The Eastern Michigan University women’s cross country team placed third with 124 points at the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Ill., on Friday.

Finishing at the top of the competition was Missouri with 65 points, in second was Illinois State with 89 points as its runner, Krista DeCeault, won the event in 20:56.15.

Finishing fourth was Eagles freshman Victoria Voronko (21:04.43). Junior Courtney Calka was 26th (22:10.37),and junior Morgan Churchwell was 28th (22:13.40).

The Eagles will continue their season with the EMU Classic on Friday in Dexter. Start time is to be determined.

The EMU men’s cross country team placed in third with 76 points at the New Balance Vic Matthews Open in Guelph, Ontario, on Saturday. The University of Guelph won the Open with 19 points.

The Eagles went into the meet missing some key runners in junior Terefe Ejigu, who was home training, and sophomore Grzegorz Kalinowski, who was ill.

Four of EMU’s runners finished in the top 20, including freshman Ian Hancke, who was 14th place and led the Eagles with a time of 25:06.6. Sophomore Nick Petro finished in 15th (25:07.1). Senior Austin Sanservino was 17th (25:11.4), and senior Austin Hendrix was 18th (25:12.1).

The Eagles will continue the season in their annual EMU Classic at 5:30 p.m. Friday in Ypsilanti.
