Club Soccer stands 3-4

Team is in sixth season, and coach is hopeful

Inside of Eastern Michigan University’s practice facility, the men’s soccer club provided examples of hard work paying off as it prepared for a game against Butler.

“We’ve worked so hard, now we can finally play in the bubble without paying,” captain James Mack said. “We’ve worked concession stands for our warmups, and now I’m getting to see everything come together.”

Founded in 2006, EMU’s men’s soccer club is in partnership with EMU recreation services and is a member of the Midwest Alliance Soccer Conference. Currently, the team is 3-4, and coach Gabe Haber sees improvement.

“I was a part of the first group, being fortunate enough to see the team from a player, to a captain, to a president,” Mack said. “I notice progress every year, and it’s been a long time coming to get our own facility, now we can focus on getting wins.”

The squad has a 10-game season, along with a regional tournament and national tournament. the team has yet to reach either, but Mack, a graduate student, remains optimistic.

“This is my time to be proud of the team, and I’m sure we’re going to make that happen,” Mack said. “My best moment is seeing the team work as one and seeing everything come together.”

The players practice twice a week, and Haber spoke about the team’s leadership.

“Anyone on this team can potentially become captain,” Haber said. “These guys are dedicated and can boost the team when were down. In the future I really wouldn’t be surprised if any of these guys became captain, each one of them is great on and off the field.”

Players were all grateful to be a part of the team, and each of them showed it. Jon Shim, now in his second year with the team, spoke about his experience.

“I’ve played soccer for 12 years now, and I’m proud to be a part of this team,” Shim said. “I can’t imagine playing anything else.”

Much of the practice takes place between Tuesday and Thursday at 1 p.m. and the team encourages anyone interested in joining to come try out.

“Come check us out, if you want to join, we’ll give you a chance,” Mack said.

The squad’s next game is against Purdue at 2 p.m. Saturday at the indoor practice facility.
