Eastern Michigan University’s Student Government made a press release on Aug. 22 announcing that positions for the Executive Board have been filled for the school year.
“Each person was chosen not only as an individual but as a piece that is part of a wider team,” Student Body President Jelani McGadney said in the release about the appointed students.
The Student Senate confirmed the members of the Executive Board that McGadney had appointed during the summer summit held on August 20th, 2011.
“The Executive Board is a vital part of student council. They are charged with carrying out the decisions made by the senators, the execution of resolutions and the day-to-day business of running the Student Government Office,” Cristina Bester, the director of communications within the Student Government said.
“It is a main coordinating body of the Student Government and sometimes may act on behalf of the Student Senate.”
“I’ve been involved as the Director of Communications since early July of this year,” Bester said about her role, specifically within the Student Government.
“That entails serving on the executive board, also serving on at least one university board, composing and monitoring all communications coming out of SG, designing promotional materials and fliers, monitoring and administering our social media accounts, email communications.”
The new members of the Executive Board are as follows: Director of Political Action Sarah Burch, Director of Student Relations Holly Knick, Director of Business and Finance Ashley Adams, Director of Diversity Olivia Mbala-Nkanga, Director of Organizational Relations Jahmeel Powers, Director of Communications Cristina Bester and Director of Services and Events Alexander Marr.
Each term for the members of the Executive Board lasts for the school year.
“It is Student Government’s belief that in order to present a united front fighting for the will of the student body we must be united ourselves and it begins with the Executive Board,” McGadney said.
The Student Government seeks to secure a powerful and focused voice for all students as well as to contribute to the unique campus here at Eastern.
“Student Government has provided me an opportunity to work with some great people whom I can and already have learned a lot from. This is such a diverse group that truly represents the campus community,” Bester said of her new experiences within Student Government and the executive board.
“The people involved really make this a positive experience. I have honestly learned a lot about the workings of the university since I began this position.”
