Penn State gives up 68 rushing yards in last start for Eastern before opener in MAC

Eastern Michigan University lost its last nonconference game of the season to the Penn State Nittany Lions 34-6 in Happy Valley on Saturday.

Alex Gillett was 18-31 for 202 yards; EMU (2-2) was limited to 68 rushing.

The Penn State quarterbacks, Robert Bolden and Matt McGloin, combined to go 21-30 for 335 passing yards and four touchdowns.

EMU got the ball to start the game and Gillett threw three-straight passing plays on the first drive, only to be forced to punt.

With Bolden starting at quarterback for the Nittany Lions, Penn State (3-1) went three-and-out on its first drive.

EMU got the ball back and the drive ended with Gillett fumbling the ball.

Penn State recovered and, after seven plays for 45 yards, got on the board first after Anthony Fera made a 29-yard field goal.

In the second quarter, McGloin was in and led Penn State to its first passing touchdown of the season with a 27-yard throw to Joe Suhey.

EMU got the ball back and gained 33 yards and fumbled again.

The Eagles gained possession again after Penn State gave up the ball.

The drive ended with Gillett being intercepted, which Penn State capitalized on with a 5-yard touchdown pass from McGloin to Derek Moye, putting PSU ahead 17-0. A score that would be held to halftime.

Bolden would start for PSU in the third quarter. He led a touchdown scoring drive highlighted by a 71-yard pass to Devon Smith, who ran untouched to the end zone.

McGloin came back in and eventually threw another touchdown pass to Moye.

EMU got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter with two field goals from Cody Fulkerson, from 21 and 22 yards.

Penn State added a 43-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to make the final score 34-6.
This was the first game for Penn State coach Joe Paterno on the sideline this season after he was injured during a preseason practice. The victory was his 404th.

EMU will host the Akron Zips (1-3) to open Mid-American Conference action at 1 p.m. Saturday at Rynearson Stadium.
