The Eastern Echo

This local college-town eatery offers a great place to meet up with friends and have a good time. What’s even more fun is when you look into its history and find out the crazy stories.

Aubree's is worth the tip

Need somewhere to go for dinner? Well, I found the perfect place. It’s a cozy little pizzeria, bar and grill located in the heart of Depot Town. Aubree’s is the epitome of a college town eatery, where you can always find good food, good spirits and a good time.

Open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday-Saturday and noon to 2 a.m. on Sunday, Aubree’s is the perfect place to go for a late-night bite. It’s a great place to bring some friends, play some trivia with a Buzztime Playmaker or catch a game on one of its many TVs. If you want a respite from the busy college atmosphere, relax on the outdoor patio while enjoying the chill Depot Town feel and the beauty of the coming fall.

Having a good atmosphere is great, but if the food is bad, there’s no point in getting out of bed. Luckily, the food at Aubree’s is amazing.

My favorite dish is the signature sweet potato fries. I was blown away.

Ypsilanti resident Byron Pastry (pseudonym) has been enjoying the delicious grub at Aubree’s since 1985. He had this to say:

“…the pizza they serve is the best around. I’ve lived in Chicago and while I’m partial to their pizza this gives them a run for their money. If you’re looking for a recommendation I’d refer anything pizza, but if you’re looking for something else their spinach balls, Cajun fries, fish and chips, or their sweet potato fries are all fantastic.”

Looking at this bustling restaurant now, you might get the idea it’s always been this
way. But, a lot has changed over the years. For example, did you know that Aubree’s wasn’t always called Aubree’s?

In the 1970’s Aubree’s was a biker bar called “Alibi.” At that time, Depot Town wasn’t known as the place to be but rather the place to avoid.

If you’ve taken a stroll around Depot Town then you’re probably familiar with the alleyway next to Aubree’s. Today it’s a homely nook with little bushes, plaques with information about Depot Town and tall tree’s with bright Christmas lights arranged within their branches. That alley hasn’t always been there.

Supposedly, there was once an extension of “Alibi” that used to occupy the space.

Although the details are unclear, legend has it that during the late ‘70s Depot Town was home to a few rival groups of bikers. The extension of Alibi was a favored hang out of one of those biker gangs. A rival group tried to execute the competition, with explosive results.

It appears they had received hand grenades or dynamite, depending on the source. In an attempt to destroy the first floor, they dropped the explosives down through the chimney. Their plan, however backfired, pun intended, when they became stuck near the top floor, destroying it instead.
