According to data gathered by the Office of Institutional Research and Information Management at Eastern Michigan University, the zip code with the greatest number of students, faculty and staff residing for the fall semester is 48197.
The zip code area is part of the greater Ypsilanti area in Washtenaw County and counts for 3,308 people associated with EMU.
Washtenaw County had a total of 344,791 occupants last year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The county is comprised of five cities: Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Saline, Chelsea and Milan, and three incorporated villages: Manchester, Dexter and Barton Hills.
The next highest number is also rooted in Ypsilanti. Zip code 48198 represents 1,399 residents. Zip code 48103 in Ann Arbor has the next-largest total of occupants with 1,308. The highest number—4,253—represents all out-of-state occupants.
“Data Warehouse capturing processes are automated,” said Sinji Yang, Senior Institutional Research
Analyst.
“Every end of term, it takes about 4-5 hours to extract student data because student data is huge. It probably takes a few minutes to extract employee data.”
Zip codes are based on each individual’s most recent permanent address on file, Yang said.
“In my opinion, it’s pretty neat to see where everyone around campus comes from—not that Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor aren’t obvious areas,” stated one IRIM employee.
The IRIM serves as a source of comprehensive information about EMU and a service-oriented provider of analytical support for administrative units.
