EMU to name new head basketball coach at press conference

Murphy, Wesley, Hipsher still in running

Eastern Michigan University has selected its new head basketball coach and has confirmed it will name the new coach at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning at a press conference in the atrium of the Convocation Center.

Athletic Director Derrick Gragg and President Susan Martin will be on hand to make the announcement.

The Detroit News is predicting Syracuse assistant coach and Detroit native, Rob Murphy as the future head coach of the Eastern Michigan men’s basketball team, but EMU will not confirm the hiring of Murphy, and instead only confirms they’ve made a decision and it will be announced tomorrow.

In the college ranks, Murphy began under Jim Christian at Kent State in 2002, where he tutored NFL tight end Antonio Gates.

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim thinks Murphy would make a great new head coach.

“He would be, I think, a great coach because he knows that area,” Boeheim told the Syracuse Post-Gazette on Tuesday. “He’s more than ready to be a head coach. Rob is a tremendous coach.”

Murphy has never been head coach of a college program, but has a well established track record in high school basketball. In his first year as head coach at Crockett Technical High School in Detroit, Murphy lead a team that had not won a game in the two previous seasons to a 5-13 record, following that first season with three straight Class B district titles.

Other candidates that have been mentioned, Ric Wesley (Grand Valley State)and Dab Hipsher (Alabama, Akron)were interviewed last week and could also be in the running.
