GREEN week starts today

Eastern Michigan University’s Student Organization, Gathering Resources to be Educated about our Environment and Nature, is hosting its annual GREEN Week.

GREEN is an organization that aims to help educate the EMU and surrounding community about the environment.

This year’s GREEN Week is March 13-19, with an event every day.
GREEN kicked the week off by painting the kiosk near Pray-Harrold and Porter last night.

Tonight is the EcoEats and Vegan/Vegetarian Challenge Kickoff. GREEN members will be cooking an entirely Chinese-themed vegan meal. Members will also be discussing vegan and vegetarianism and how beneficial living either lifestyle is. The meal begins at 3 p.m. and will be held in the Roosevelt Hall kitchen.

Tuesday night students are invited to learn how to create their own windowsill garden during EcoArts. The gardens will be made from recycling materials such as newspapers and tin cans and can be used to grow herbs, vegetables and flowers. EcoArts will be held 6-8 p.m. at Big Bob’s Lakehouse. GREEN will be providing all materials.

A viewing of the film “Garbage Warriors” and EcoChat will be held Wednesday.

“Garbage Warriors” is a documentary about architect Michael Reynolds and his green team; they have been creating off-the-grid, self-sufficient communities for 30 years.

The EcoChat will discuss Reynolds’ ideas of Biotecture, a profession in which buildings and environments are built with consideration as to their long-term sustainability, and Earthships, homes that are made from natural and recycled materials.

The film will be played at 6 p.m. in the Halle Library Auditorium.
For those who are curious about what happens to their recycled materials once they toss them in the recycle bins, GREEN will be taking a tour of the Materials Recycling Facility in Ann Arbor on Thursday morning. Those who wish to carpool should meet at 7:30 a.m. at Starbucks in the Student Center.

On Friday, GREEN will be meeting to help clean up the EMU-Ypsilanti community. Volunteers should meet at 9:30 a.m. in room 346 of the Student Center to participate.

Finishing off the week-long event, GREEN will be learning how to properly label storm drains Saturday. The event will begin by discussing what storm water management is and how it can improve lives. After, volunteers will have the opportunity to help label storm drains.

All of the events during GREEN Week are free, open to the public and count towars Learning Beyond the Classroom credits. For more information about GREEN or GREEN Week, visit www.emich.edu/vision/programs/green.
