An armed robbery occurred in the 2000 block of Washtenaw Avenue at a convenience store Monday morning.
Deputies arrived at the scene and discovered the suspect had entered the Sunoco gas station at 8:17 a.m., walked up to the cashier and produced a black handgun.
The suspect then pointed the handgun at the cashier and demanded the money out of the cash register. The cashier emptied the cash register and gave an undetermined amount of money to the man.
The suspect fled the store in an unknown direction. There was no vehicle observed.
The suspect was described as a black male, approximately 5-feet-10 and of a thin build. The man was wearing a tan jacket with a hood attached and a multi-colored bandana covering the lower portion of his face.
Christopher Zehr, an Ypsilanti resident, said this is one of many reasons he is considering relocating to a different city.
“I haven’t been here my entire life, but when I first got here it was pretty quiet,” Zehr said. “I would say I live in a middle-neighborhood not too far from where the robbery occurred and it’s pretty scary.”
However, Zehr said he believes the sheriff’s department, along with the Ypsilanti Police, have done a good job handling what he thinks is an uptake in crime.
“They can’t be everywhere at once,” Zehr said. “It’s just scary to think these robbers and criminals can be lurking somewhere in my neighborhood.”
Anyone with information is advised to call the sheriff department’s tip line at (734) 973-7711.
