A 32-year-old woman was killed Tuesday afternoon in a traffic crash involving five vehicles on Ecorse Road at Harris Road in Ypsilanti Township at 4:40 p.m.
Stephanie Joyce Stone, a resident of Canton Township, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Stone’s 13-year-old son, a front-seat passenger in her 2002 Ford Taurus, was transported to the University of Michigan Hospital in critical condition. Her 11-year-old daughter was a backseat passenger and was transported to the UofM hospital with non-life threatening injuries. All injured individuals were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
Both children are expected to survive.
A 1995 Ford Mustang was traveling eastbound on Ecorse Road at a high rate of speed when the driver disregarded the red light at Harris Road and hit Stone’s vehicle, which was going northbound on Harris Road, according to a Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office release.
The impact pushed the 2002 Ford into three other vehicles, but none of the other drivers were injured in the crash.
The driver of the Mustang, a 34-year-old male Ypsilanti Township resident attempted to flee the scene by foot, but was taken into custody by a deputy who responded to the crash.
The driver was transported to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Deputies said alcohol use and speed by the driver of the Mustang appear to be factors in the crash.
The driver will be held in custody and arraigned in the next couple of days on multiple felony charges. According to deputies, the Ypsilanti Township man has a prior conviction for operating while under the influence of alcohol.
