The Ypsilanti District Library is preparing to add a new section catered specifically towards teenagers and young adults.
“Teen Zone” is a project both library visitors and library officials consider to be important.
Donna DeButts, the community relations coordinator for the library, said children and teens occupy the lower level of the YDL Michigan Avenue facility frequently.
“Right after school there is an influx of teens and they tend to overwhelm the younger children, getting on any and all computers that are in the area,” DeButts said.
“It is uncomfortable for some of the larger teens to sit in youth furniture; little kids are somewhat overwhelmed by the bigger students.”
The new design for the library will incorporate a dedicated “Teen Zone” to the library with a computer area with glass dividers, a group study section and a teen area divided from the rest of the library with partial walls, based on approved designs between the library and the architects.
DeButts said upgrading the lower level to enhance the space for teens was a goal in the 2007-2010 strategic plan.
“So our architects analyzed the space and gave us some options,” she said. “It will move a wall, expanding the teen area for more space for teen materials. A glass wall will create a counter area for five computers that teens may stand at or sit on stools providing a little more privacy and appropriate sized space.”
A press release from the library said $25,000 would be needed to make the project possible. The funds will be collected through donations and so far the library has reached a third of the way towards its goal.
The library’s Web site, ypsilibrary.org, said “Teen Zone” teens will be able to work on career planning or college applications, homework, participate in program planning with other Teen Advisory Group members and just have fun.
According to the Web site “the new ‘Teen Zone’ will benefit both teens and our community by providing a safe and attractive after-school option.”
The layout for the facility has already been agreed upon between the library and the architects.
Construction on the project has not begun.
