Student Gov. doles out cash

Oranizations appeal for needed funds

Eastern Michigan University’s Student Government held committee meetings Tuesday evening in the Student Center regarding issues and concerns.

The Business and Finance Committee consists of a board of students. The committee listened to representatives of various student organizations that needed funding.

Green was one of the student organizations that presented its case for funding. Green is an organization dedicated to making EMU and surrounding communities environmentally friendly and efficient.

Green needed $450 to buy the rights to a movie that would be shown in the auditorium. It was approved by the board.

Another organization that got approval was His House Christian Fellowship. It needed $850 for a trip to Chicago during the spring. The group’s representative said the goal of the trip is to serve the homeless, reach out to families and connect with people in the Chicago area.

The board amended this to $700 because some students who were being funded for the trip were not EMU students.

Another organization seeking funds was the Educational Theatre Collaborative.

“Our goal is to raise awareness and increase creativity among students,” said Donald Amerson, the co-founder of Educational Theatre Collaborative.

Jenny Sawtelle-Kopera, also a co-founder said, “We would be using the funds, if granted, for T-shirts and materials like banners and adverts. A guest speaker will be invited. We have raised funds in other places too, including from our own pockets.”

This was approved, though it was amended.

Sabrina Ford, the president of Collegiate DECA, said her organization needed $1,000 for a conference to help members remain active in the community.

Although Ford said she had yet to register for the conference because she needed to know the outcome of the meeting, she gave reasons that granted her an approval.

“This is an international organization,” Ford said. “It is learning beyond your classroom, using this knowledge to actively respond in the classroom, school and community.”

Ford also said Collegiate DECA is involved in community services.

Other organizations that were present and approved were the Japanese Student Association, the Muslim Student Association, the United Nation Student Alliance and Hockey EMU, which is ranked No. 25 nationally.

Some organizations that applied for funding were absent from the meeting.
