Everybody knows being energy efficient is a tough chore. Now you can get something for it.
This year marks the first Energy Idol contest at Eastern Michigan University. It is a contest to see who is the most energy efficient, or “green,” here at EMU. Students can enter by submitting a video, song or even drawing. It does not matter how it is entered as long as it shows how much you care about the environment.
“We hope to get a good turnout for this year, so we can do it again next year and make it better,” said Steve Moore, EMU’s energy and sustainability manager.
Future plans include more projects and better prizes. Previous prizes have been plaques for the halls, declaring them as energy efficient. No prize has been chosen yet, but Moore assures students it will be worth the entry.
Moore ran another project called the Recycle-thon, and the winner will be announced soon. The winner was determined by seeing which residence hall recycled the most. The amount of recycling tripled in every hall. You can follow contests like these on the twitter account EMU Green. The Energy Idol contest is open to all students on campus. The students themselves will vote on it in February. Be sure to vote for your friends.
“I want to get students excited about being Green. I want to get them thinking about it and reward them for it,” said Moore.
Phenomena like global warming are debatable, however, it is a fact that the Earth should be taken care of.
