Enrollment numbers up for fall semester

Enrollment numbers at Eastern Michigan for the fall 2009 semester are up from last year by 1 percent with more than 2,220 new students enrolled.

“I think they’re good. I think they’re to be expected,” said Director of the Office of Admissions Kathy Orscheln about the enrollment numbers.

Despite the seemingly small increase in students attending EMU, other statistics are increasing with more rapidity.

“Our new freshmen with a 3.5 to 4.0 GPA is up 15 percent,”Orscheln said. Freshmen with a 3.0 to 3.5 GPA is up 10 percent.

Non-traditional (return to learn?, transfers?, etc.?) students are up 17 percent and transfer students are up 14 percent.

“Last year, our numbers of new freshmen were down a bit,” Orscheln said. The admissions department said the lack of new students might be due to more people opting to attend their first two years of college at a community college and transfer later.

“Eastern is becoming a better option for getting more for your money,”
Orscheln said.
