Managing Editor, host of Eastern Echo Sports Podcast, names 2013-14 Eagles of the Year

The school year is quickly winding down and with it ends an eventful year for Eastern Michigan University’s athletic teams. As part of my weekly appearances on E-TV’s Eagles Sports Update, I share my “Eagle of the Week” – a player or coach who stands out to me for their performances in the week leading up to the show. For this, the final issue of the school year (not counting the summer semester), I have compiled a list of my Eagles of the Year for all of EMU’s sports, as well as for some specialized categories.

Attempted unarmed robbery in Alexander lot

Eastern Michigan University’s Department of Public Safety is investigating a reported attempted unarmed robbery that occurred in the Alexander paid parking lot around 8 p.m. Tuesday. There were no reported injuries. The suspect is described as a male, six feet tall, approximately 200 pounds wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt.


	Student Government continues with business as usual while they wait for a new President and Vice President.

Miller wins presidential election

The Desmond Miller/Steven Cole ticket was named the winner of the 2014 Eastern Michigan University Student Government Presidential election on Saturday. The write-in ticket of Fatma Jaber/Chris VanWashenova was disqualified for multiple campaign violations, according to a report issued by student government Election Commission Chair Nto Mbeng Agbor.


Annual autism walk raises awareness

Wednesday, the men of Eastern Michigan University’s Iota Phi Theta Fraternity hosted their annual Autism Walk. The event was established in April 2012 by Thomas H. Crawford III, a member of the fraternity.

April 11 The Department of Student Conduct and Community Standards reported to police that a loud verbal dispute occurred between two students at Pittman Residence Hall. Police documented the incident and verbally warned both students.

Eastern Michigan University’s interlocal agreement with the EAA and Detroit Public Schools has been embroiled in controversy since October 2013 when six teachers unions in Washtenaw County began boycotting EMU student teachers. The teachers unions refuse to end the boycott until EMU withdraws from the interlocal agreement with the EAA.

Search for Associate Vice President continues

Eastern Michigan University continued its search for a new Associate Vice President of Student Life on Wednesday in the Student Center. The final candidate, Timothy Wise, shared his ideas to advance EMU’s student support system. The other candidates, Calvin Phillips and John Berry, already presented their vision for the school.

False police report leads to serious consequences

A Timely Warning went out to the Eastern Michigan University community Thursday night regarding a female student who was reportedly the victim of an attempted armed robbery. About an hour later, an update to the Timely Warning was released stating that the female student had recanted her statement.


Former student charged with larceny

Eastern Michigan University police officers arrested former EMU student Ian Evans Ratke on Saturday. Ratke was arrested for multiple larcenies committed at the Bruce T.

Starting May 5, 2014 Eastern Michigan University will officially have a 24-month full-time physician assistant graduate program.

Lobby tables raise awareness on consent

Consent is a part of daily life for the average college student. Whether it involves asking to borrow a person’s pencil, or to have a bite of your buddy’s meal. However, when it comes to sexual consent people tend to shy away from the discussion.


Food Scoop: Soft pretzels

Soft pretzels don’t seem to belong to the realm of the home kitchen. They pop up in gas stations or malls, where they can be drizzled in cheese that strongly resembles melted plastic. But there I was, having a snack of cheese and crackers, and thinking about how the crackers really resembled the flavor of soft pretzels.

The pair talk about their semesters and the final big events of the year, the Eastern Echo Media Gala and Rock The Patio.
