With the 2012 Olympics just around the corner, Eastern Michigan University is proud to be sending swimmers to the 2012 Olympic Swimming and Diving Trials at the end of June and a former EMU runner will be competing in London for his home country.
Briana Emig, a junior freestyle distance swimmer, will swim the 400 IM, 400 freestyle and 800 free at the Swimming and Diving Trials which will be held in Omaha, Neb. Emig proved to be a strong swimmer last year and was chosen as a First Team All-MAC selection.
For the men’s team last year, junior Jacob Hanson was a vital part of the team’s success. He will compete in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Hanson told EMU, “I love competition and swimming has always been my calling.”
Other current EMU swimmers that will make the trek to Omaha are Mike Swain, Mike Fisher and Troy Esentan. There will also be two former EMU swimmers, Kevin Doak and Derick Roe who will be competing in the trials that take place from June 25-July 2.
A former runner for EMU, Eric Alejandro, has already qualified at the trials and is headed to London this summer to compete in the 400-meter hurdles. He will not be representing America, but rather his home country of Puerto Rico. The final round of the 400-meter hurdle event is set to take place on August 6.
EMU has had the honor of sending 17 track representatives to the Olympics in the past 52 years.
We will have to wait and see how many of our Eagle athletes will have the chance to travel to London and be part of the Olympics.
