Lights, camera, fashion will take center stage at this year’s Fashionality fashion show, Harlem Renaissance: Mode at 8 p.m. on Thursday in the University Park.
Students are anticipating which fresh designs will excite them this year, along with the theme that will bring it all together. Many will attend this free event as a way to get to the next stage of opportunities in fashion and also have fun.
“The theme of the show, Harlem Renaissance, is like a representation of the rebirth after The Great Depression,” Fashionality president Brittni Brown said. “The rebirth through fashion has had an impact on us since we are going through a recession.”
The Harlem Renaissance-themed show is a chance to show art through clothing, making it possible for people to imagine something far beyond their expectations as a whole. Dreams and talent will be showcased as models walk with confidence in their designer’s line.
“A range of different genres of music will be played at the fashion show,” vice president of Fashionality Tim Wilson said. “All the music that is chosen will be easy for the models to walk to. Also, the vision of the designer will be reflected through their line of clothing.”
All who attend will have a collection of music to enjoy as the models portray the vision of their designer.
“My collection is called ‘Death of a Lover by Fallen Piano’. It’s about the sexual affairs, the sexuality and the sexual freedom of that decade and what the show is focusing on is all about,” designer Andre Moses said.
“I’m super excited because this is the second show I’ve ever been in, and I’m doing this show because a lot of people come and I would get so much publicity for doing this. I’m doing ten looks, seven of them being girls and three of them being boys. My family and coworkers are coming, too. I’m just so excited.”
Being a part of such a major event has inspired many, if not hundreds, of students to take pride in working day and night to show their inventive spark, and is a great way to encourage people to make a difference in fashion.
“The mission of Fashionality is to inspire, motivate and stimulate a pattern of success in the creative minds of students at Eastern Michigan University through all aspects of the world of Fashion,” participant designer Melody Murdock said. “Fashionality is sincere in its efforts to provide information about fashion while promoting academics, healthy living, confidence and self awareness in the community.”
A positive effect could occur when students attending the fashion show see its promotion of self-awareness in the community. This hopefully will target more participants in future fashion events.
“Personally, my collection was inspired by a sort of Beyonce ’Run the World’ type of thing,” secretary of Fashion Avenue Sha’nesha Taylor said. “I designed clothes that I thought she would wear in her video and maybe an ordinary empowered woman would wear. So it’s a little sexy, and a little different.”
Inspiration from others can help create a piece of life through designers. Whether it’s an empowered female or a geek wearing a pocket protector, this year we will journey through a series of innovative concepts. All those looking to have a defining moment of fashion and art combined are encouraged to attend. This occasion is not only limited to fashion lovers, it’s open to for all to enjoy and experience.
