Sen. Suchowesky Suspends Student Body Presidential Campaign

Student Sen. Kirk Suchowesky announced on Saturday, March 5 that he’s suspending his campaign for Student Body President.

In a statement, Suchowesky said, “After much personal reflection this past week and after consulting with our campaign team, Anna [Newmyer] and I have decided to remove ourselves from the presidential and VP ticket.”

Citing his health as a major concern, he said, “from this point forward, I need to make sure that my health takes a priority. Although I am not having any urgent health problems at this time, I have come to realize through this campaign process that being student body president would require too much strain on my health.”

This comes just days after the Student Body Presidential Debate that took place in the cafeteria of the Student Center. The two remaining candidates are Student Body Vice President Ethan Smith and Student Sen. Balaal Hollings.

Elections for the Senate are also taking place and Suchowesky said he and his running mate, Sen. Anna Newmyer will remain on the ballot.

“Although the position of Student Body President requires greater demands and stress, I have been able to maintain my health as a senator throughout this academic year,” Suchowesky said. “For this reason, both Anna and I will remain on the ticket as senators for re-election.”

To close his statement, Suchowesky thanked his campaign team and encouraged students to participate in the upcoming election.

“We want to thank everyone who has supported our campaign, and we are glad to have connected with so many people at EMU,” Suchowesky said. “We intend to maintain those connections. Finally, we still encourage everyone to VOTE March 27-28 on their my.emich page between the other candidates for Student Body President and VP.”

The Student Government elections are scheduled for March 27 and March 28. Students can vote on their my.emich account during those days. Results will be announced at 8 p.m. on March 28.
