Ethan Lowenstein, professor of teacher education, has been selected to act as Eastern Michigan University's John W. Porter Distinguished Chair for Urban Education for the 2015-16 academic year.
“Lowenstein has more than two decades of experience in school system reform, educational leadership development and teacher professional development in moral and civic education,” according to EMU's Office of University Communications.
The Southeast Michigan Stewardship Coalition selected Lowenstein’s project Supporting Urban Education through Place-Based Education. SEMIS is an effort to engage innovative strategies to reform how children are taught in the Metro Detroit region. With his SEMIS colleagues, Lowenstein will be working with SEMIS for place-based education.
Place-based education is an educational philosophy that involves proactively addressing community problems through the staff and students of local schools.
Lowenstein previously won the Michigan Campus Compact Faculty/Staff Community Service-Learning Award in 2007. He also won the Dean's Award for Innovative Teaching in 2006 and the 2014 Dale Rice Award for Academic Innovation in AS-L and Community Engagement.
